When nice shoes are made but cant be worn- :(

Faux Sheepskin Boots With Faux Fur

I LOVE these shoes, I mean absolutely in love with these shoes. Like we can run away and hide by the fireplace drinking hot chocolate love. But no!!! They cost $30 before tax, and I cant even wear them. Why? Because these shoes which are made for the winter, can not be worn in the winter! (Hopefully you understood that, lol) Some will say, wear them in the fall before it starts snowing, but whats the use of making fashion that cant transcend to meet the environmental conditions in which I live? In simple terms, WHY CANT THESE BE WATERPROOF?!?!?!?!?!

We are born with the ability to love- hate is something that is taught

I found this video on YouTube about kids reacting to the cheerios commercial that spark debate over the media. The commercial features a interracial family in its ad. Watching this video made me cry. Not only because of what the kids said, but the fact that hate, and intolerance are taught. I cry for my kids sometimes because I hoped the world they came into would be a beautiful place. But it seems like every time we move forward one space, we go back 4 more. I cry because we live in a society that is self absorbed, angry and selfish. I cry because there are children in this wold being hurt, abused and mistreated this very moment. I cry because we no longer value what comes from our hearts, but the clothes on our back. I cry because this world is so full of hate.

I have encountered, witnessed and to this very day still deal with ignorance, hate and racism. Im not going to lie sometimes its hard not to feel hurt, angry and want to retaliate, BUT I DONT.

As a parent, a RECE and a member of this community I vow to teach my children and all children I encounter the power of love, respect and acceptance. I vow to teach the skills one should posses to be a positive member of society. I vow to do my part, so that one day the future generations can finally live in harmony.

Early Childhood Education: No Place for Men?

There is so much focus on gender biases for women in the workplace but I never thought (or knew) that males encounter gender biases as well. The glass elevator is real.

Work in Progress

Even after years of studying gender as a sociologist, I was not prepared to see a man in the infant room on my daughters’ first day at a new child care center in August 2011.  I assumed the man was a dad.  When my three year old happily introduced me to “Teacher Adam” the next day, I realized that he was the first male child-care worker I had ever met (thus, my Biblically-based pseudonym for him– “Adam”).  I left the center very pleased that my family had chosen a seemingly progressive child-care facility in the small California city to which we had just moved.

I soon found out that not all of the parents or female staff were so pleased.  These staff and parents believe that men should not care for small children, especially infants, in a child-care facility, and that any man who wants to do so is a…

Schools implementing more Art based curriculum- Seeing Better results in other Subjects.

I found this article from a blog I follow (Education World).

http://www.educationworld.com/a_news/right-brain-initiative-finds-arts-transform-education

In class we were reviewing a  Sir Ken Robinson video on “Do schools kill creativity?”. He basically says that schools are not allowing students to use their creativity which helps aid in expanding their learning and that educators need to move on from the linear ways that we used to teach.

Technology- logging off

This video is about how technology has taken a toll on our connections with face-to-face people. And the fact that technology has created loneliness and a span of other issues ( ADD,introvert ism, etc.) As a RECE, this speaks to me. I believe that with the ever changing society/world we live in, it’s necessary to teach the up coming generations how to use technology to help expand their minds, skills and talents. However as an educator I believe it is also the educators responsibility to teach the upcoming generations how to “turn off” technology and how to make between human contact. As educators we need to plant the seed. We need to build and scaffold the skill of “turning off”. As educators, we need to teach children the importance of nature, exploration, communication and interaction, so that our future generations are not only technologically advanced, but humanistically advance as well. We as educators have the power of influence and knowledge, so why not use that to help create a better balanced community/ society.

Changing Times- We move Forward, Not behind!!!

Anyone who is from Mississauga, Ontario or has been to SQ1 will find this one interesting. I found this picture of square one, it was taken from a bird’s eye view about 40 years ago. Its amazing and scary (in a way), to see how we have progressed and things have changed. We are a race of innovation and constant progression. My hope for the future is that we progress enough to realize what we are doing to our planet earth and realize that earth is the only planet that can sustain life. We need to love and protect it, otherwise we just might be the creators of our destruction.
